Week 34: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

As Fiona Apple said, I've been a bad, bad girl. My last post was for week 28. What's the matter with me? I've been taking photos every day, I just haven't had time to put together blog posts. I've also been having some computer trouble which adds to my neglect. I'm posting this week to get back on track, and will play catch up with the weeks I missed.

Week 28: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

We were treated to a night at Citifield to watch the NY Mets play the Arizona Diamondbacks. Patio seating behind home plate, waitress service, private area and good people. After a two hour rain delay the game started. A great night for all.

Week 27: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Our Red-tailed Hawk left the nest. He/she was perched on a pile of dried brush, calling for Mom. We were able to get close without causing any distress to the little one.

Week 25: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Sunsets are so beautiful that they seem almost as if we were looking through the gates of Heaven. ~ John Lubbock

The beach in Mattituck, on the Long Island Sound, is one of our favorite places to spend a peaceful evening.  Just a short walk from our cabin brings us to this spot where we can watch amazing sunsets. Two of my nieces helped me with this week's photo.

Week 24: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Hydrangeas are my favorite sign of spring & summer. They green up early with the promise of beautiful, long lasting color come July. The flower buds are just starting to show.

I missed posting for Week 24 on Sweet Shot Tuesday. I'm playing catch up this week.

Week 23: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Spring and summer means tomatoes. Hot house, vine, cherry, beef steak, heirloom. There are so many varieties to choose from but the best tomatoes I've ever tasted come from Cooper's Farm in Mattituck NY. They are a deep, beautiful red, inside & out. They taste wonderful without adding salt (one of my husband's favorite ways to eat tomatoes) or balsamic dressing. (my favorite way to eat tomatoes)

These vine tomatoes are from Waldbaum's. Unfortunately Cooper's tomatoes won't be ready until sometime in July. He put 3000 of his special plants, which were started in a greenhouse, into the ground three weeks ago. This year I thought we'd try to grow some of his special tomatoes in containers at home in Brooklyn. I have a dozen plants which are potted, fertilized and, as of this morning, staked. Several of the plants already have tomatoes growing. I feel like a proud parent and I'm so excited I am tempted to name them.

But, that would make it a little awkward when it comes time to cut into them.

Week 20: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Mother's Day was very special this year. For the first time in three years,  both of my kids were in NY to spend it with me. They are my heart.

Week 18: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Yesterday the Freedom Tower, aka One World Trade Center, officially became the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. I can't wait for it to be complete, open for business and ready for visitors. It's a beautiful reminder that we are strong and resilient.

No matter how old I get, I will never give up my overly sugary and colorful breakfast cereal.

Week 13: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Murphy's spending the next four days with us while his family goes on vacation. He loves his ball  and his rawhide bone. He snores and worse. But he's sweet, funny and smooshy.

Week 12: P52 Sweet Shot Tuesday

Long Beach, NY has been a part of my life, on and off, for 35 years. When I was in Junior High school, my friends and I would take the LIRR from Valley Stream station to the Long Beach station to get to the beach during the summer.

Fifteen years later I was taking my two kids to the Magnolia Playground on the Long Beach boardwalk to play on the swings and climb on the jungle gyms. During the summer we'd pack up our beach gear several times a week and make our way to the beach for some sun and sand castles. We'd usually stop on the boardwalk for a soft serve ice cream cone before heading home. Besides vanilla and chocolate, they had pistachio. My little guy loved pistachio.

Fast forward another 15 years. When the kids would be home from college and we were looking to kill some time before dinner we'd drive down to Long Beach and take a walk on the boardwalk. We'd walk and talk and laugh. Sometimes we'd sit on one of the benches that lined the boardwalk and watch the windsurfers and surfers. Sometimes we'd go down in the winter to walk on the beach and the boardwalk in the snow. Special moments, all of them.

2012 brought Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Sandy brought devastation to Long Beach. Homes and businesses were damaged. The Magnolia Playground was pretty much destroyed and the boardwalk was damaged so badly in so many places that the town decided to tear down all 2 1/2 miles of it. Years of memories gone.

The rebuilding should be starting soon and the town is saying the boardwalk  should all be back before the start of the 2013 beach season. I'm hoping that we'll be walking out there this summer, making some new memories.
